I read a lot of books. I like fiction, but every now and then something
nonfiction catches my attention. This week I read one of my dad's
books- How Do They Do That? published in the oh-so-current 1981. So
some things are waaaayyy outdated but some probably haven't changed.
Like how they put stripes in toothpaste. Or how they shell peanuts
without breaking them. Now, how the copy machine works is beyond me.
It's chemistry, folks... photons and chemical reactions and so forth.
So that book was very interesting and I shared a great deal of it with
my husband who has a bad habit of falling asleep when we aren't talking
about a.) the Lord b.) studio equipment or c.) none of your business.

So here I am with another random collection of facts. This is why
people think I'm smart. I just walk around (well. I used to walk) and
my brain is like der-der-der--coooookies- and so forth. Then person A
(not my husband) says, "Man, I wonder how they shell peanuts?!" And
some little random fact gear kicks in and there you go.
And everybody says, "Man, you are so smart!" But I'm just thinking,
"Cap'n Crunch....mmmmmmm"

and speaking of the good Captain, I must bid you good day.

I am glad that you have found some more reading material.

Do you like crosswords or wordfinds or any kind of work books?

Good Morning!

I really like random facts, and especially interesting information, such as how things are done. Now I’m wondering how they shell peanuts with our breaking them.

How about an answer?

jess said...

well... first of all I don't really need any crosswords or wordfinds... they take too much effort.
second: yep. read 'em all. except Hind's Feet and the sequel which are in a box that richy has to get for me.

well, josh. At least in 1981, the Planters factory in NC shelled 100,000 lbs of peanuts a day.
First they go through a reel system where a lot of the dirt and rocks are shaken off. Then they dump them through screens where more "alien objects" fall thru the holes and float away. Then they tumble thru a series of screens which sort them by size... 5 sizes, I believe.
Then they're roasted in the shells, an electric eye sorts out discolored ones.
just a minute...

Josh said...

Man, what a cliff hanger!!!

jess said...

now the final part is technical so I'll quote the book a little.
They head for the shellers, semicircular baskets with diff size openings to accomodate the peanuts. The openings are measured in 64ths of an inch.
4 bars bolted on to a central hub turn at a rate of 200 revoultions per minute. The beaters which have sharp edges are precisely spaced at a specific distance from the baskets so that as they strike the peanuts, they are forced thru the holes. The shells break and the nuts and shells fall through, and suction fans draw away the lighter hulls.
Then the nuts are sized rolling through screens again. They're cleaned by shooting them up an incline, all the remaining sticks and rocks roll down.
Another electric eye scans for discoloration, and workers do a final exam. Sorted into 5 edible grades, and the immature ones are used for peanut oil.
The whole process took 30 minutes in 1981.

husband requested a different avatar... submitting, as always

Good morning everyone

Josh said...

Thanks for the explanation, my thirst for randomness has been satisfied.

I know you like a lot of fiction, but have you or Richy read “Wild at Heart” or “Captivating”? I read WAH last year after it was recommended by a friend, then recommended it to many others. Shannon just got done reading Captivating. Captivating is probably right up your alley on the heart of a woman / princess and why woman are how they are. It’s not the normal rhetoric, it’s very good stuff!!

jess said...

nope. maybe because I don't go outside or see anyone?

jess said...

I have read WAH, but not captivating yet

Raina said...

sorry your not feeling well julie. get plenty of rest.

jess said...

julie-
i've heard cocaine helps

jess said...

oh, and just so things are more authentic, you should type with a cold...

like i cad hear bery well, ad by dose...

Josh said...

Did you like WAH?

Do you like Rand Alcorn’s fiction books? I have one, which I can’t recall the name of, right now, that I read halfway in high school. It was pretty good; I’m just not a fiction person. I read a fiction book last year for the first time since that Randy Alcorn book in high school (like 10 years). I didn’t really enjoy it.

Julie- Sorry to hear you’re feeling back. Hope some R&R helps.

Raina said...

what is WAH about?

jess said...

Yeah, I like Randy Alcorn... his books always have interesting heaven scenes

one he did about the persecuted church in China -Safely Home- was really good.

jess said...

but there is no writer greater than Ted Dekker. He is a genius above geniuses. I just read a sentence and then sit back and think "what a genius!"

Josh said...

I’m also sorry to heat you’re feeling bad.

My spelling is off today (not that it’s always on). I made “without” two words earlier, and it was “with our”.

Shannon and I haven’t gotten the flu or sick in over 3 years, other than my sinus infection last year. We use the supplement Echinacea when the season start, and maybe some extra vitamin C. Always works for us. Neither or us have ever had a flu shot.

Viking Granny!!!! said...

That really does help Josh......

From what I understand if you take it at the first sign of the flu, it shortens it and makes it a lighter case.

Zinc losengers also help..

jess said...

Jule- if you go in the morning she is much slower paced... before all the patients back up.
I love her... and her staff. They never mind my paranoid phone calls...

I had such a bad experience with my last doctor... that's part of why I'm overwhelmed by their kindness...

Josh said...

Puns about being sick:

If you get sick at the airport, it could be a terminal illness.

Doctors feel fine on ships because they are accustomed to see sickness.

One of my all time favorites:
A man who rode in a carpool felt sick whenever they passed under a certain tunnel. His doctor diagnosed this as carpool tunnel syndrome.

jess said...

this week has been kinda quiet... probably cause mama's computer is out..
I think Georgia's at school. She has to get a better job to support her new baby.

Josh said...

A lighter topic… how about pancakes… or feathers… or maybe helium balloons?

Josh said...

I only lick turtle stamps, how many could that be?!

It’s funny that the day after I made that profile, I put on a light green shirt after I got home from work. In the middle of the evening, Shannon goes, “looks like you do want to be a turtle.” The next day, without realizing it, I wore a three toned green polo shirt to work. The moment I came in the door, from work, Shannon goes, “You really do want to be a turtle!!” It was pretty funny!

Josh said...

And, I don’t think Jessica would like us talking about procreation on here.

Watch it Julie, the moderator may give you the boot if you keep it up.

Viking Granny!!!! said...

Hey Dentist,.

What would a dentist do for a joke?

Anyone really know a good dentist.;

Gentle and kind and patient and all of that.....?

Viking Granny!!!! said...

Linda, your kids are so blessed to have a mom like you.

It is so hard getting used to a new baby and I am sure that you are making things alot smoother just "being there".

Viking Granny!!!! said...

thanks sweety!

Josh said...

So Julie, you only trust your teeth when you are at Dr. Nelson’s office? That’s in interesting, I’ve never thought about when I do and don’t trust my teeth.

Turtle procreation, the Atlantic Green Turtle, and endangered species.

Hey Jess I never knew that your folks were in Frankfurt.

J. O. B.

I am glad that he has already been kicking up a storm.

jess said...

lol steph

Josh said...

Just for the record, I do know what kg meant by “engage”. I work in a professional office, “engaged employees”, “engage the customer”, an “engaging work experience”, etc. are all things I’ve even said.

I was keeping in character with my punny self.

I AM NOT STUPID... REALLY, I PROMISE I’M NOT!

Georgia said...

I'm here I was at school, but my teacher got sick in the middle and the rest of the class started watching Family Guy real loud.Real maturity there. So I went home.

Hey am I the only one who think Josh's puns are funny.

Vg, Mom was talking about when she came to Germany to see Layla being born. Mike and I were living there in 82 when she was born. We lived in Darmstadt 20 miles south of Frankfurt.

Cheap Used Wagon

Josh said...

Maybe go out on Hwy 105 west between 3083 (Teas Nursery) and Loop 336. You have a couple old junk places that have some good used stuff there. I don’t know about a wagon, but maybe. Not sure how old you’re talking about. Is it for a prop or something?

Josh said...

Ah ha. Well then Wal-Mart may be the default. You may be able to check the zoo’s website or call for the price, then you could decide.

jess said...

Georgia- yes,you are the only one. Besides Mrs. Josh, that is..

kg: you may be on to something. it's the effort that kills me.

jess said...

Kg of course you can't answer this... but do you have child(ren)?

Josh said...

No Georgia, you and Mrs. Josh are not the only ones, but even if you are, I will continue my work here.

Raina said...

thats interesting

jess said...

hmmm....

jess said...

josh. maybe you shouldn't quit your day job

Josh said...

Jessica- Why would I do that?

kg- do you like turtles?

Raina said...

i like turtles, But only the goofing looking ones. lol

Raina said...

we have a turtle for a pet. we put names in a hat and let hannah choose. So the turtles name is Astro.

jess said...

I am glad you got to see Germany. It is cool but not as cool as Danmark.

I am off to the doctorola.......

Anonymous said...

Could kg be jd?

Viking Granny!!!! said...

No cuz JD is sick today and I believe her.
Poor little thing

Anonymous said...

Eeeeewwwwwww! Ben kissed you?! Blah! Did he get a tallie for that?

jess said...

Eva: make sure you have an appointment

jess said...

and JD doesn't have the energy to make up a fake ID and then figure herself out

Anonymous said...

but jd went to the zoo this weekend & used a wagon. what's up with that, eh?

jess said...

i believe it was an instant 6

Anonymous said...

jd is always looking for a good deal, too

could jd be kg???

the mystery continues . . .

jess said...

kg, to the best of our knowledge is single and 27. unlike Julie who is married and 26.

Josh said...

I honestly had Julie in my mind as a loosely possible candidate for kg, so I was very interested to see if kg would be here while she was driving home from Greenspoint to Conroe, and kg was here. She wouldn’t have had enough time to get home and post, so jd is out as a candidate, in my opinion.

jess said...

HEY GEORGIA: WHAT GIVES??

jess said...

now in my hg&hf he was already gone... mysterious

jess said...

now, if i found out i was josh i would also shake uncontrollably. and maybe vomit.

jess said...

after 5 years I'd call that abandonment, matt

jess said...

or vice versa

jess said...

kg: is there anything you did not mean to do that just happened? look very slowly.......

jess said...

do i know what i am implying? yes. but it's not what i really think. thus, the question. was it an accident?

Josh said...

And Matt was my other suspicion; I think a little slip up may have proved me right.

jess said...

KG: is it true??

jess said...

I'm just... i'm kerflummoxed. i'm completely brainswoggled.

Anonymous said...

where is julie when you need her

Josh said...

Awesome! I was convinced kg was one of our fellow bolggers and was thinking they might make such the mistake that Big Daddy just did. I also had been noticing some phrasing from kg that I likened unto Matt in the last couple days.

Your charades are over!

jess said...

I love this blog, too.

Anonymous said...

KG seems to know awful lot about bill. I am guesing that this is bill richards. Who knows Mat, Bill, Ben, Jess, around 27, and has children?

jess said...

uh, that would be "who is matt tullos, alex"

jess said...

kg, old pal, family friend. will you DENY that you are Matt?

Josh said...

1)Matt’s wife is “with child” and knowing Matt, he would use that as a technicality to be able to say positively that he has child(ren).

2) Matt wouldn’t have needed a wagon for his own children the last time he went to the zoo, however he and D’Ana frequently take her relative’s kids places such as the zoo.

3) The slip post was pretty direct, unless kg is a full on LIAR. It was when we went on “our” honeymoon, that is possessive. Unless kg is a total LIAR, they are the “our” that went on said honeymoon and sent the turtle to Bill’s, that would be Steve Matthew Tullos.

Josh said...

Sorry Matt, fellow turtle lover, but you have to admit it looks like you’ve got red hands here.

jess said...

kg said...

I believe this is the same Ben. He played in HG&HF.

heavens gates hells flames

jess said...

I don't think kg could be d'ana. i know bill has no kids. i don't know why kg would post posing as matt accidentally posting as kg
